Pine Wood Derby    
  • Car Specifications
    • Must use the wheels and axles from the Pinewood Derby Kit (Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles). Seams or burrs on wheels and axles (nails) maybe be removed with light sanding or polishing, but the shape or surface of the wheels MAY NOT BE CHANGED.
    • Wheels must be placed as indicated on the wood block in your Pinewood kit, no extended wheel base.
    • Including the wheels, the maximum size of the car is 7" long by 2¾" wide
    • The minimum width between the wheels is 1¾"
    • The minimum clearance between the car bottom and the track is 3/8"
    • The maximum weight of a car is 5 ounces and will be weighed by the same scale.
    • Non-moving metal weights may be added to reach the maximum 5 ounces.
    • Dry lubricant only may be used
    • All cars must have been built within the current scout year. 
    • Remember that children learn by doing and not watching!
  • Items not allowed on the car
    • Wheel bearings
    • Bushings
    • Springs
    • Starting Devices
    • Loose or moving weights
    • Liquid lubricant
    • Wheels that have had more than a light sanding or polishing done to them.
    • Unofficial or substitute wheels or axles.
  • Race Day Rules
    • Have Fun!
    • Once the car has been registered and checked in, only the Race Officials and the Scout racer may handle the cars during the races.
    • No adjustments may be made to your car once you are registered and checked in.
    • Repairs to the cars will only be allowed under the supervision of a Race Official
  • The Preliminary Races
    • During each heat, two races will run simultaneously. Lane 1 vs. Lane 2, and Lane 3 vs. Lane 4.
    • Each car will race eight times, twice in each lane.
    • No two cars will race each other more than once.
    • Points will be awarded as follows:
      • Win 3 points
      • Tie 2 points
      • Loss 1 point
    • The maximum points you can earn is 24.
  • The Finals races
    • Standard double elimination. If you lose twice you are out.
    • 12 to 20 cars will go to the Finals. The exact number of finalists depends on the number of racers and the preliminary results.
    • Your Race Lane will be determined by drawing from a deck of four cards, the cards being a 1, 2, 3, or 4.
